The Best Tripod Buying Checklist

Everything we check before recommending a tripod, from load capacity to the plate on top. Tick items off as you compare models; your progress stays in this browser.

Start with your gear

Weigh your heaviest camera body with your heaviest lens, plus any battery grip, flash or cage you mount.
Pick legs and a head rated for at least two to three times that weight; a rated load is a ceiling, not a comfortable working load.
If the lens has its own tripod collar (a 70-200mm or longer), mount the lens, not the camera, and add the collar foot to your plan.
List what you will shoot most: travel, landscape, astro, video, vlogging, phone or tabletop work.

Height

Check maximum height with the center column down; that is the steady working height. Raising the column adds wobble.
Add the height of the head and camera, then compare with your eye level so you are not stooping for every shot.
Check minimum height and whether the legs splay flat (leg angle stops) or the column can reverse for ground-level macro.

Size and weight

Measure your bag or carry-on, then compare with the folded length with the head attached. See travel tripods
Check the tripod weight with the head, not the legs alone, and decide what you will carry on a long hike.
More leg sections fold shorter but set up slower and flex more; four or five sections is the usual travel trade-off.

Build and materials

Carbon fiber vs aluminum: carbon is lighter and damps vibration better and is not as cold to hold; aluminum costs less and shrugs off knocks. See camera tripods
Leg lock type: twist locks are slimmer and pack well; flip locks are quick to read at a glance and easy with gloves.
Feet: rubber for indoors and rock, spikes for dirt and grass, and a hook under the column to hang a bag in wind. See tripod accessories

Head and plate

Head type: ball head for fast stills, pan-tilt or geared for precise landscapes, fluid head for video pans, gimbal for big telephotos. See tripod heads
Shooting video? Look for a fluid head with adjustable drag and a flat or bowl base on the legs. See video tripods
Check that the clamp and plate are Arca-Swiss compatible so plates and L-brackets swap between heads.
Check the head has a separate panning lock and, for stills, a friction control so the camera does not flop when loosened.

Other ways to get stable

Shooting sports, wildlife or events on the move? Compare a monopod with feet before buying a second tripod. See monopods
For phones, desks and close-ups, a mini or tabletop tripod may be all you need. See mini tripods
For phone video and vlogging, check the clamp fits your phone with its case and whether a remote is included. See phone tripods
